Defeated young ones get younger |

Last Saturday (17th May 2008) was the annual Young versus Old inter club game.
40 players on a hot Saturday afternoon met to play in a fine demonstration of champagne rugby. It should be noted that three seasons ago the age cut-off for young was 35. This year the age was 21! This is great for the club. We are in a much stronger position than most other clubs and will be a force to be reckoned with in a couple of seasons. The strength in depth of our younger players is the envy North Lancs 2.
Back to the game......
Keenly fought but predictable in tactics. The "less young" gave the very young a lesson in close quarter play. The very young reminded the old farts (The over 21s :-) that there is no substitute for pace and agility.
To cut a long story short the points scored were 48 by the young and 47 by the old. In a pre-match briefing, it was agreed (and understood) that penalties could not be kicked. Unfortunately age and wisdom go hand-in-hand. In an incident in the first half the young ones elected to kick a penalty and were successful. However the 3 points gained by this act do not count. Therefore the official result is Young ones 45, old ones 47. I declare the old ones the victors!
